We are so very proud of our Envirocare Grounds Maintenance, Contract Sales Executive – Janet Nowland.
As a follow up to the “Penrith Punisher” last year, which saw 12 cyclists take part in a gruelling 80 mile bicycle ride. This year, now more famously known as the “Richmond Ride”, which had 7 cyclists getting involved and all managed to complete it again.
This is now to become an annual event, which started with one of the cycling team wanting to raise money for the local hospital which helped his son when he was in poor health. He’s now fighting fit, but everyone seemed to enjoy the cycling so much that an annual ‘big ride’ gave all involved a reason to keep the training up and to keep in mind other great local charities.Janet and the rest “Richmond Riders” cycled 82 miles from Preston, Lancashire through the to Richmond via Settle and Hawes, with a total elevation of over 5,000 ft. Janet says; “The wind behind us all the way made a long journey much easier and more enjoyable”.
Returning the following day, the team left Richmond and headed home via Grassington and Barnoldswick for their return 80 mile journey. The strong wind continued all the way back and Janet adds; “Unfortunately, for our return journey the wind was head on which was a killer – you know it’s a strong wind when you have to pedal downhill!”, adding; “The most notable moment of the day was the 1600 ft climb before our Kettlewell stop, followed by a 1 in 4 descent. This would have been great, if it hadn’t been for the hairpin bend half way down it! It certainly made it a hairy ride!”
With no accidents, mechanical issues or quitters, 162 miles in total – a good weekend by all accounts but Janet tells us “I’m glad I have a whole year to recover before the next one!”
